Short - circumcision
Dear visitor,
dear medical fellow,
the Catholic medical association UCPG - Union of Catholic Physicians Germany, gives informations about "medical aspects of the circumcision of boys".
Surgical circumcision ist a bodily injury and has nothing to do with a religious education of boys.
UCPG has started a questionary among his 120 members in Germany and Austria.
This medical-religious tabu-theme concernes also the Christian doctors.
As Catholic medical association generaly we are occupied in the medical-religious area too.
Therefore exspecially as PHYSICIANS we effort this theme, because politicians and clergymen are potentially biassed and stay under the pression of the media, the public and the 'Zeitgeist' - and are not medeical experts.
Every physician has learned the 'differential diagnosis' and has to rewspect all areas of his knowledge and handling.
In July 2012 UCPG has started a questionary among his own 120 medical members, regarding medical apsects of circumcision.
No protest ..
The Catholic medical association UCPG does not affialiate the protests of ecclesiastic and religious organisations and institutions regarding the sentence of the Cologne District Court:
These giudges had determined in June 2012 the circumcision of a 4-year old boy as bodily injury.
UCPG-meaning:
A circumcision only for religious reasons for us is a bodily injury.
Giuridial aspects of 'medical intervention" more
But:
- A circumcision for hygienic and medical reasons is all right.
- A circumcision of GIRLS is absolutely a boily injury and to reject in every aspect!

Medical opinions
Attention:
The following statements are personal opinions of our medical fellows!
1) From Vienna, Austria, Mrs. Dr.
We should let the evaluation to trials. Here we have less bodily injury (an 'allowed medical injury') , more the question of the decisional power of the parents.
The same aspect applies for every vaccination, which has effects to the further life (in case of protection or demage).
To make a circumcision was normaly duty of the 'hous-father' or priest.
Therefore let us aspect the work of politicians and let us respect the law!
2) A generaliste doctress from Rhenania-Palatine:
Principally we should accept in all religions also their rituals and customs, as long as they are not nocent for the body.
At the other hand the children do not have the possibility to make an objection, and the circumcision is not reversible.
In the front of the discussion is the mutilation of the female genitals, which brings permanent pains.
3) A young physician from Lower Bavaria:
I do not want to advocate a medically indicated circumcision.
I am not a surgeon and prefer possibly smoother ways of healing, regarding also the treating of phimosis.
Surely also our LORD has had a circumcision.
But the Christianity - thanks to Paul - hase gone another way.
It is logically a bodily injury, if since the beginning of the 2000 it is not allowed to parents, to exercise physical or psychical force against their children.
We could discuss this question also regarding the vaccination of children.
4) A physician from Trier:
I am in favour of the aspect, that circumcision of children is a bodily injury and therfore among religious aspects not admissible and anchronistic.
It is a direct achievement of the Christianism, that all offernigs in a unbloody form were effectuated olny and completely by Jesus Christ.
Therefore I am against circumcisions in the age of childrens.
5) An orthopedic doctor from Northern Germany
For my opinoin evry cicumcision o boys without medical necessity, for ex. phimosis, is a bodily injury.
Therefore I do not understand our bishops, as sometimes, if they are ready to accept circumcision by religious reasons.
This is a wrong understood tolerance, respectively a knee-fall in front of the not-Christian religions....
Warning of our Webmaster after some critics:
BKÄ -medical association wants to animate to thinking and to underline the MEDICAL aspects.
Medical reasions for Cc.
A dermatologist from Upper Bavaria answers:
1) If the circumcision may not be effectuated by physicans and under good hygienic circumstances, this new pratcise leads inevitably to the fact, that medically not qualified people make this surgical procedure:
Secretely as a ritual of backyard.
This increases the danger of postoperative infections and following demanges of these children.
2) You cannot simply abolish by a decret a ritual, existing since yearthousands and giving religius identity.
3) In countries with a humide-hot clima the circumcision is further a medical senseful measure.
Circumcised men are less susceptible to infections (by mushrooms, viruses), because the humid milieu in the preputium is not more present;
there is not possibility of secundary phimosis by parasites, transported by a puncture of insect.
4) Congenital phimosis can be treated immediately. Secundary infections were prevented, eczema too.
5) Probably these positive experiencies in the Jewish religion have directed to an acceptance of this ritual by the Islam, although there is non explicte direction in the Coran, to make circumcisions of boys.
(In the contrary a circumcision of GIRLS is naturally a severe bodily injury, without every medical sense and nowhere religiously prescribed in the high religions.
She contucts to a high rate of complications in later deliveries and the danger of infections after surgical intervention.)
Education by parents
A new discussion:
The Vienna Cardinal Christoph Schönborn is citated by www.kath.net:
http://kath.net/detail.php?id=37362
Schönborn an the sentece: Religious education to eye?
Schönborn is against the 'today widely spreaded view', postulating that 'a child should can decide by himself, when ist is older'.
In the consequence some Christian parents refuse early bapstism of their children.
The Cardinal answered:
'Each education forms the life of the children. The YES to a child is a life-long decision for its life.'
The implicite attack aigains religious eductaion remebers at a time, 'as the State would take the right from the parents, to educate their children by themselves and according to their measures of values."en
Schönborn wordely: 'That would be really an acto of force.'
Our comment as Catholic physicians:
The Union of Catholic Phsyicians accepts the right and the duty of parents to make a religious education of their children.
But every surgical intervention de facto is a bodily injury and has not to be trivialized.
(The case was a 4-year old boy with bleedings, delivered in the Cologne University Clinic.)
We all should reflect:
1. Not to instrumentalise PHYSICIANS - but lawyers, politicians, clergymen too - for a purely religious motivated intervention.
They do not be threatened, to let effectuate future interventions illegally and secretely in the "backyard" or on "kirchen-tables"
Nevertheless: Circumcision is allways a bodily injury.
And a surgical intervention is not a "religious education".
Therfore no mixing of Medicine with religion.
As Christians we do not have fear something of cause of the Cologne sentence.
2. If protest now, we should think about OUR dayly education of our children:
More worse is, that allways more Christian parents today do not educate and do not live their religious tradition.
HERE we should we become active as Christians...
(Once more again:
The circumcision does not have to do nothing with a RELIGIOUS education of boys!
Further comments of Catholic doctors
In the Christian media-magazine PRO the dircetor of BKÄ-UCPG wrote a comment to an article of the Frankfort religoin-philospher Prof. Thomas Schmidt:
http://www.pro-medienmagazin.de/gesellschaft.html?&news
"Thank You for Your open words, which do not present the 'Zeitgeist'.
Exspecially as physicians we advert:
1. The circumcision is a surgical intervention, which not has to be ignored or romatisised.
2. Ina questionary among Catholic physicians Germany and Austria we have the impression:
- Not to mix religion with medine,
- to respect the human dignity (also and exspecially of the baby!),
- a surgical intervention is not necessary for the relgious education of boys,
- Liberty of religion - YES,
- to take seriously every bodily injury,
- no 'undogmatic furiousness' (thank You for this expression),
- please no atmosphere of end of the world among the believers.

A difficult discussion
Catholic UCPG-doctors do not want (as formulatetd in the ARD-TV-transmission "Anne Will" on 11.7.2012)
- no "barrier of thinking" in this matter,
- no interdiction of thinking,
- no belittlement of circumcision by clergymen, politicians, ...
- no polarisation,
- no 'wave of rebellion'
- no concealment of complications,
- no sexualisation of boys and the society (by circumcision)
- no uncertainty or criminalisation of physicians (mehr),
